Imitrex is for managing migraine headaches with or without aura (dark spots, flashing lights, wavy lines). In other cases the drug is used only if advised by the doctor.

The medicine belongs to serotonin 5-HT 1 receptor agonists. Acting in the body the drug makes blood vessels in the brain narrower. This effect is useful for relieving migraines.

Imitrex is not for the use of those who suffer from allergy to its ingredients or have coronary artery disease, an ischemic heart disease (such as angina, heart attack), brain blood vessel problems (stroke, transient ischemic attack), moderate to severe heart disorders, or other blood vessel disease including ischemic bowel disease and Raynaud syndrome. People with uncontrollable hypertension or serious liver disorders; some migraines forms including hemiplegic, basilar cannot take this medication. Some drugs do not interact with Imitrex. These are monamine oxidase inhibitors, sibutramine. The drug is forbidden for you if you have taken other migraine treatments in the last 24 hours, including an ergot derivative (dihydroergotamine, methysergide), any serotonin 5-HT 1 receptor agonist (rizatriptan, eletriptan).
